Catalan sculptor and painter, Ripoll
Domènec Batalla (Valencia de Alcántara, 13 February 1944) is a Catalan artist dedicated to sculpture and painting, with a career marked by a contemporary style and a self-taught background. His work can be found in various public spaces, particularly in the Ripollès and Osona regions, where he has made a significant contribution to the cultural landscape.
Having lived in Ripoll since the age of four, Batalla began his working life young as a lathe mechanic in the textile industry. This experience gave him a deep understanding of materials and handling techniques — skills that would later be reflected in his sculptural work. At the same time, he developed his artistic vocation in a self-taught manner, deepening his knowledge of drawing and painting.
In 1995 he opened his studio in Ripoll, a space at the heart of his creative activity. From 2003 onwards he shared it with his wife, the Japanese-born painter Chikako Taketani, with whom he formed a significant artistic and personal bond until her death on 2 August 2013.
His sculptural trajectory evolved from early works in terracotta in the 1970s to a consolidation in bronze and other materials. From the 1990s onwards, Batalla began placing works in public space, progressively establishing himself as a leading figure in public sculpture across the region.
In parallel he developed a painting practice with series such as Astres, Buit, Silenci and Esferes, which explore abstract and introspective concepts. His work continues to evolve through new collaborations, including that with the group SAU30.
